Week 7 NFL Free Pick Article

By Adam Barone—Though it’s a bit premature to jump back on the Saints bandwagon and automatically assume that they’ve returned to their 2006 form, this week’s pick is the Saints.

Drew Brees and the boys are back in the big easy this week against the Falcons as nine point favorites. Yes, the Falcons. Everyone take a minute to throw up.
Okay. Now wasn’t that more fun than watching Joey Harrington throw the ball to no one while six giant oafs jump on top of him? Fortunately, or not so much, Byron Leftwich is now the starter in a “permanent change.”

The Saints sacked the Falcons eight times last season when Michael Vick was their quarterback, and since Byron Leftwich literally has a partially metal leg, this is a key stat.

The Falcons are also on short rest after the Monday night game, and away from home. They also have no confidence under a new head coach, especially with a quarterback change.

Let’s get into some concrete information.

Atlanta is 24th in rush defense, giving up 132.3 YPG, and Reggie Bush seems like he’s caught on to the NFL. He ran for 97 yards on 19 carries against Seattle, while contributing 44 yards as a receiver. The Saints will need to get Bush going if they hope to get back into the NFC South race.

The Falcons are also 20th against the pass at 220.5 YPG allowed. Drew Brees looked better last week, and we all know what this offense can do. Despite the poor start, New Orleans is ranked 11th in passing. Look for Brees to get Lance Moore a few more touches through the air this week.

With Leftwich starting Atlanta will need solid production from the running game. New Orleans is decent against the run, allowing only 105.8 YPG. Last season against the Saints Warrick Dunn and Jerious Norwood rushed for a total of 150 yards in two games. The Saints won both games--31-13 and 23-3.

The Saints have some of their confidence back and should see now as their opportunity to get back into the NFC race. The Falcons on the other hand are in total chaos still adjusting to a new system. Atlanta will struggle, the Saints will roll.
