Week 5 NFL Free Pick Article
By Adam Barone—The Chiefs square off with the Jaguars in Kansas City this week and shouldn’t have trouble covering five points. Jacksonville is 2-1 overall and coming off a bye week, while Kansas City is 2-2 after beating the Chargers in San Diego last week 30-16.
Both teams rank 20th or below in most major offensive categories, with the exception being Kansas City’s 19th ranked passing game, which seems to be coming around. Rookie WR Dwayne Bowe caught eight passes for 164 yards and a touchdown last week following a five reception 71 yard performance against the stingy Vikings D the week before. The Chiefs, for the first time, seem to have a receiving threat not named Tony Gonzalez.
The establishment of a passing game should loosen
things up for Larry Johnson and the running game, even with the lackluster
play of the offensive line.
The Jaguars, on the other hand, seem to have close to no ability to
put any points on the board at all. Last season’s stud rookie
RB Maurice Jones-Drew has barely made a blip on the radar this year,
with RB Fred Taylor leading the team in rushing with a total of only
156 yards after three games. QB David Garrard has thrown for only 630
yards on the season.
The positive for the Jags is their defense, which ranks fourth in total yards allowed and second in total points. Their D does rank 26th against the run, some good news for Larry Johnson. The Jags are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as a road favorite, 1-4 in their last five following a win, 1-5 ATS in their last six overall, and 0-4 ATS in their last four games as the favorite.
The Chiefs on the other hand are 7-1 ATS in their
last 8 home games versus a team with a winning record. They’re
also 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games as the home underdog and 11-3-1
ATS in their last 15 home games.
