Week 4 NFL Free Pick Article
By Adam Barone—Last week’s free pick was easy. Detroit sucks. Bet money on Detroit sucking. Detroit will probably suck until a meteor crashes into the earth and we all burst into flames. Or something less horrible.
There are quite a few intriguing games on the schedule
this week. Don’t immediately throw your dough on Pittsburgh at
home on Monday night.
INDY! Look out! It’s a trap. Short Round is here to save your
ass so you can get the girl. Actually just some money, but if you find
a website/casino/bookie or anything else that rewards good bets with
women instead of lousy greenbacks I’d like to know about it.
So why bet the Joe Flacco-led Ravens against a division rival on the road? Well, that’s exactly why you do it. The Ravens have won five of the last eight and four of the last five times these teams have played. One of those losses was by a single point. They’ve also covered the spread five of the last six times.
Most noteably, Baltimore hammered Pittsburgh AT HEINZ FIELD 31-7 on Christmas Eve 2006. Merry Christmas. They also won 27-21 in their last matchup.
Five and a half points is way too much in what’s
probably the most brutally physical rivalry in football. Pittsburgh
is banged up and Baltimore comes to town extremely confident. They’ve
started 2-0 and got an extra week for rest and preparation because of
Hurricane Ike.
Willie Parker is out and will be replaced by rookie running back Fumblitous
Mendenhall, and the rest of the offense is still beaten and bruised
from the whoopin’ the Eagles put on them last week. They’re
also going up against the top defense in the league. Baltimore has only
surrendered 161.5 yards per game. If the Steelers can’t establish
a ground game they’ll have to depend even more on Big Ben’s
soar throwing shoulder to move them down the field.
Nose tackle Casey Hampton is also expected to be out, inviting the Ravens to play even more to their strength—the ground attack.
The Ravens have a reasonable shot at stealing
this game, but even if they don’t it promises to be close. Bring
a pillow and expect a 12-9 field goal fest.
