Week 2 NFL Free Pick Article
By Adam Barone—No matter how you did in last week’s NFL action, it’s time to get back on the horse. There are plenty of quality plays on the board in Week 2, and you can’t bet unless you’re riding a horse. It’s a rule.
The best place, it appears, to target weakness in the lines is in Cincinnati. Vince Young is out, and one of the best defenses in the league will match up against possibly the most underachieving offense in the galaxy.
Don’t let it bother you that the Bengals beat the Titans 35-6 last season. So what? The Titans beat the Bengals 20-7 in 2001. Who cares? The Bengals aren’t the same team, and the Titans want payback.
The Bengals have covered just once in the last six games that followed a game in which they managed less than 250 total yards of offense. They’ve also covered just three times the week after a game that saw them score less than 15 points.
Even more convincingly—The Bengals are winless in their last eight games following a division game in which they scored 35 points or less playing against an opponent whom they beat in their last meeting.
As for Vince Young, his mommy says that he’s sad. His knee hurts and people are mean. They should just be nicer to him. Not a single fan has made Vince a pie, or brought him any cookies at the games. How can he play football without a nice cuddle before he has to run away from the big mean men on the field?
No. Missing Vince Young does not make the Titans worse. It makes them better. Mr. T pitties you, fool, for thinking such nonsense.
Young’s career quarterback rating is 68.3. He’s thrown 22 career touchdowns and thrown the ball to the other team 32 times in said career. He’s what people in the know like to refer to as “bad.” Some would even say “really bad.”
Kerry Collins is a former first round pick and led the Giants to the Super Bowl in 2001. He also throws overhand, unlike Young. He’s been somewhat inconsistent as a starter in the NFL with a 73.4 quarterback rating, but is a better pure passer than Young. The Bengals defense will be forced to respect his ability to throw from the pocket more than it would Young’s, which will undoubtedly allow more room for LenDale White and Chris Johnson to run.
The more important story here is Tennessee’s stifling defense. They were eighth in the league last season in points allowed, surrendering only 18.6 points per contest. Most attribute their success to the fact that DT Albert Haynesworth ate four running backs, two full backs, part of a lineman, and a quarterback’s leg.
The Titans allowed just 10 points and 189 total yards to Jacksonville last week.
No, it doesn’t matter if one of the Jags players got shot. That’s still impressive.
The Titans sacked Jaguars’ quarterback David Garrard seven times, and hit him ten more. They also intercepted Garrard twice, despite the fact that Garrard threw only three picks all of last season.
This week the Bengals are at home, but are dealing with way too many issues. “Chad” is being his usual mature self, causing plenty of distractions, Chris Henry is still suspended, Carson Palmer’s nose is broken, they have a new starting running back, and T.J. Houshamzoo has a hamstring problem. And their uniforms are HIDEOUS.
The Bengals managed 10 points and 154 total yards of offense last week against Baltimore. Carson Palmer managed a whopping 94 passing yards and a 32.3 quarterback rating. Apparently his nose is the source of all his power. New running back Chris Perry ran for 42 yards, and had the same number of receiving yards as you.
The Titans are probably a better team without
Vince Young, and the Bengals just have too many distractions.
