Week 12 NFL Free Pick Article
By Adam Barone—We’ve held off on it for weeks now, but Ace’s free pick this week goes against the Titans. The Jets have room to cover without winning, making this pick even more attractive. Expect Fav-ra to lead the former Titans to a very competitive showing against the current Titans.
Last week’s pick was sabotaged by our missed assumption that Larry Johnson was good. Countless opportunities for the Chiefs to take control of the game were missed because their stud wasn’t so studly.
We’ll let that one go and get back on the horse for this week.
The Jets have actually covered the spread the last four times they’ve played Tennessee. Additionally, the road team in this match up has covered four of five and the underdog has covered the last four. Both teams have better leadership at quarterback now, but the Jets’ offense, led by Favre, is actually more capable than in the past.
The last time these two teams played was December 23 of last season, with the Titans winning 10-6. Chad “rubber arm” Pennington went 26-32 for 264 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. The note-worthy performance was by LenDale White, who carried 23 times for 104 yards. A season ago the Jets allowed 134.8 yards per game on the ground, good for 29th in the NFL. This year, after some off-season additions, they’re fourth in the league. They surrender only 81.3 rushing yards per game. Don’t expect Thunder and Lightning to light it up with Jets’ defensive tackle Chris Jenkins’ fatness clogging the middle.
On the other side of the ball, Dustin Keller is really starting to come into his own. In his last two games combined he’s caught 14 passes for 194 yards and a touchdown. He also dropped what would have been an easy touchdown against New England last week. The best place to beat the Titans sixth ranked pass defense seems to be over the middle with the tight end, so look for Keller to have a big game.
The Jets are steadily gaining confidence and are
eyeing an AFC East title. They’re certainly capable of winning
this game, let alone covering 5.5 points.
