The NFL Football Spreads consist of one team being elected as the favorite, and the other team, the underdog. Here is a hypothetical example of a typical NFL spread you might have seen from a recent football season.
Tennessee +6.5 Indianapolis -6.5
The favorite will always have a minus sign after the number; where as the underdog will always have a plus sign in front of their NFL spread. In this scenario Indianapolis is the favorite and Tennessee is the underdog. How this all plays out is as follows. Let's say you placed a wager on Tennessee +6.5. If Tennessee wins the game straight up or loses by 6 points or less you win. If Indianapolis wins the game by 7 or more than your bet is a loser.
Books use a simple formula where you have to lay $110 for every $100 you would like to win if your wager is a winning one. So in essence if you wanted to bet $100 on the Colts -6.5 you would need to lay $110 to make that bet. After the final result the sportsbooks take all the money that was bet on the losing team and pay the people that placed their bets on the winning team. They make their money on the juice, that $10 charge to place your bet we talked about earlier. And that is NFL football lines summed up for the most part.
