Lots of Points on Tap as Air Force Hosts Unbeaten Utah
By DARRELL L. BREESE
Saturday’s contest between the Air Force Falcons and the unbeaten Utah Utes will not kick off until the band plays the Air Force song.
“Off we go into the wild blue yonder,
Climbing high into the sun;”
While the song highlights the superiority of the U.S. Air Force, it will serve as a prelude to the offensive display that will be turned in by both teams. Instead of climbing into the sun, the score will climb with every possession.
The odds makers are putting the over for this game at 54.5 points, which should be an easy target for these high-powered attacks. Utah by itself is averaging 47.7 points a game, meaning the falcons will only need to score once to equal the over. However, the Falcons are putting up 30 points a game, behind the NCAA’s top rated running game.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham has his team playing well, having topped Colorado State 59-6 last weekend. His challenge will be keeping the players focused on the Falcons and not looking ahead to next Saturday’s contest against TCU.
It should not be a problem as Utah is riding a wave of momentum after winning its last six games by at least 24 points.
The Utes have balance on offense with sophomore quarterback completing 23 of 29 passes for 321 yards last Saturday, improving his conference-leading quarterback rating to 168.6. Running back Eddie Wide, who had 121 yards on 17 carries against Air Force last year, could be in line for another big day against a Falcons defense allowing 205.8 rushing yards per game.
As impressive as the Utes balance is, the Air Force attack up to par considering opponents know the Falcon’s will be running the ball.
Junior quarterback Tim Jefferson masterfully operates the triple-option offense and has his team averaging 326.5 yards on the ground to lead the country.
Whittingham said that the Falcon offense is a “big departure from what we see every week.”
In addition to Jefferson, who leads the team with 8 rushing TDs, the Falcons have a long list of guys capable of breaking a big play in the triple option, including Asher Clark who averages 5.9 yards a carry and Jared Tew who sports a 4.9 yard per carry average.
This game should be fun to watch it you like offense. Lots of points will be scored. Take to over in this contest.
