Sooners will spoil Longhorns Season
By DARRELL L. BREESE
It’s one of the greatest rivalry games in college football. For the past 104 years the teams from the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma have meet on the gridiron for what has become known as “The Red River Rivalry.”
Since the Big 12 Conference formed in 1996, the two schools have split 14 meetings, but Saturday’s contest favors the Sooner’s both on the field and in the mind games leading up to kick off.
The Longhorns lost this game when they fell to UCLA 34-12 last week. As if the pressure of winning the rivalry game wasn’t enough, the Longhorns must win Saturday to salvage their season.
Despite the game being played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, which is 190 miles from Norman and 196 miles from Austin, it takes place during the State Fair of Texas, meaning it might as well be a Texas home game. More pressure for 20-year old athletes to handle, meaning the Sooners will come into the Cotton Bowl with less stress and it will on the scoreboard.
Behind the play of quarterback Landry Jones, the Sooners will be taking the Golden Hat Trophy, which resides each year with the winner, home with them across the Red River.
Freshman Jones was thrust into the starting role last season with the injury of Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford. He performed well, but wasn’t ready then. However, this season he is proving to be more than capable to guide the Sooners.
He tossed for 370 yards last week against Cincinnati and recorded a season-high 380 passing yards against Florida State. His favorite target this season has been Ryan Broyles, who has had 100 or more yards receiving in seven straight.
Look for running back to have a big game. Not only will he be running to help the Sooners win, but he is also running to join the elite of college tailbacks. He needs only three rushing yards to crack into OU’s prestigious top-10 list for career rushing, which includes legendary backs like Adrian Peterson, Chris Brown and Billy Simms.
Murray is a triple threat with career totals of 2,907 rushing yards, 102 receptions for 1,088 receiving yards and 1,323 return yards.
The Texas offense has been mediocre this season. QB Garrett Gilbert has struggled to fill the shoes left by Colt McCoy. He is the second lowest-rated passer in the Big 12 after totaling four interceptions and two fumbles over the last two games.
Gilbert will not perform much better as the Sooner defense is stiff up front and has the best defensive backfield in the conference. Oklahoma has 12 takeaways this season, thanks to interceptions by Jamell Fleming, Demontre Hurst, Travis Lewis, Jonathan Nelson and Quinton Carter.
Look for the Sooners to dominate and break the 13-game Texas win streak in the Red River Rivalry.
